Al meets Kumbh – KAVYA, an initiative by the Global South Film Festival

KAVYA (Kumbh AI Vision by Youth Artists) brings together Kumbh, AI, youth and cinema in a new storytelling experiment.

Sometimes, an idea is born because history, culture and technology come together at exactly the right moment.

2027 could be one of those moments.

The Global South Film Festival will begin its journey in India with its inaugural edition in 2027. At almost the same time, one of Bharat’s great ancient and living cultural traditions will once again come alive across its sacred geography.

Kumbh.

Kumbh is much more than a gathering. It is a living tradition of faith, spirituality, rivers, mythology, astronomy, culture, memory and millions of human experiences. In 2017, Kumbh Mela was inscribed by UNESCO on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

But traditions don’t live only in the past. They evolve with every generation. Kumbh has been experienced and represented through oral traditions, texts, art, photography, cinema, television and digital media. Today, a new generation has another powerful medium at its disposal.

Why KAVYA?

KAVYA is a Sanskrit word meaning artistic expression or insightful wisdom or a work of imaginative storytelling. For this platform, KAVYA represents the idea of turning imagination into visual through AI and cinema.

Ancient stories meet a new medium, as young creators create their own poetic vision of Kumbh.

Artificial Intelligence.

So the question becomes: what happens when an ancient living tradition meets a new language of storytelling?

That is where KAVYA – Kumbh AI Vision by Youth Artists comes in. KAVYA is a new youth filmmaking initiative from GSFF AI, inviting creators aged 18 to 25, from India and around the world, to create a 7–11 minute AI-generated film inspired by Kumbh.

The idea is simple.

Kumbh has millions of stories. Which one is yours?

A creator might explore its people, places, traditions, mythology, rivers, astronomy, environment, technology, memory or future. The interpretation is theirs.

Because AI is the medium. Cinema is the form. The young creator is the storyteller.

The timing makes KAVYA even more interesting. The 2027–28 Kumbh window brings Haridwar and Nashik–Trimbakeshwar into focus in 2027, followed by Ujjain in 2028, creating an extraordinary opportunity for stories to move beyond the screen.

Selected KAVYA films may be presented through the KAVYA journey, including screenings associated with Kumbh in Haridwar, Nashik–Trimbakeshwar and Ujjain. The top 10 films will be premiered during the inaugural Global South Film Festival, The host city and dates of inaugural Global South Film Festival will be announced at the BRICS SUMMIT. 

 

 

Outstanding creators can also receive awards, trophies, certificates, global recognition and creator visibility through GSFF plus upto 1 million dollar as prize money.
But KAVYA is not simply about winning.

It is about being seen.

It is about giving young creators an opportunity to experiment with a new medium, interpret a living tradition through their own eyes and potentially take their stories to new audiences.

It also raises a larger question for the worlds of art and cinema.

Can AI become a new medium for contemporary artistic expression?

And what happens when young creators use that medium to reinterpret cultural memory?
These are questions that institutions, artists, filmmakers and audiences will increasingly have to engage with. KAVYA is one small experiment in that larger conversation.

Kumbh represents memory. AI represents possibility. Cinema represents storytelling. Youth represents the future.

And GSFF provides the platform through which those stories can travel. Perhaps the most interesting question is not what AI will do to culture.

It is:

What will a new generation do with AI when it has something meaningful to say?
